DIY TOURING THE WORLD

A six-part web-series made with the assistance of The Wireless about the differences between countries and communities that impact on the underground touring musician. Filmed throughout China, USA, UK, Europe, New Zealand & Australia. Produced by A Low Hum.
CHINA: It hasn’t always been on the radar for touring bands, but many are starting to see China as an affordable and exciting alternative to predictable destinations like the UK and US. Here Jorgensen finds a nascent music scene - one growing rapidly in tandem with the Chinese economy.
USA: In this episode, Jorgensen explores the USA. Here independent promoters take it upon themselves to create a platform for music, art, and attitudes that reflect the world they want to live in.
EUROPE: Jorgensen heads to Europe, a place which is the closest a DIY band might get to feeling like royalty. Europe equals exceptional hospitality and atypical venues - think boats, art galleries, squats and shipping containers.
UNITED KINGDOM: Jorgensen finds himself in the UK. As a hub for the music industry, it's a magnet for artists looking to “make it”. With more supply than demand, it’s turned into a difficult place for a touring band.
NEW ZEALAND: New Zealand has a small population, few places to play and not much money for touring bands - but you can’t beat the beautiful landscapes, hidden gem venues and fantastic audiences.
AUSTRALIA: In the final episode Jorgensen heads to Big Sound - a music industry conference and festival held in Brisbane. Industry events offer the chance to propel artists to their next career tier but it's also expensive for bands to get there and perform. Jorgensen meets some of the artists who played the festival to ask them if they think it’s worth it.
